Who is Part of Your Breast Cancer Care Team?
After a breast cancer diagnosis, a team of breast cancer experts will begin to develop your care plan. You will meet with both a medical oncologist who specializes in breast cancer and a breast surgeon. The medical oncologist will typically oversee your treatment plan, supported by a group of other professionals who play crucial roles in the treatment process.
Your care team will include several specialists, such as:
- Medical oncologist - Coordinates and oversees a treatment plan with other specialists. Medical oncology treatments include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy.
- Breast cancer surgeon - Performs surgery to remove the breast cancer, including performing biopsies, lumpectomies, mastectomies, and other surgical procedures. They work closely with other specialists like medical oncologists and radiation oncologists.
- Radiation oncologist - Plans and administers radiation therapy to treat breast cancer.
- Plastic surgeon - if needed to perform breast reconstruction surgery after breast cancer removal
- Radiologists and pathologists - Provide precise imaging and diagnostic analysis to determine the most effective treatment approach.
- Physician assistants and nurse practitioners - Serve as liaisons between the oncologist and patient, guiding them through treatment and offering education and support.
- Patient nurse navigators - These nurses help patients navigate their treatment journey by providing personalized guidance with appointment setup, answering questions, accessing support resources, and more.
- Oncology nurses - Our oncology-certified nurses are with patients in our infusion center to administer drugs and monitor side effects, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Social workers and supportive care specialists - They assist with emotional, financial, and logistical challenges to ensure comprehensive patient care.
